Council controls the management and maintenance of 4700 public lights within the Palmerston area. This includes street and park lighting (but excludes lighting along Northern Territory Government roads).
Reporting a fault
The ongoing operation and maintenance of lighting is an important part of community safety. Residents can assist by reporting light/s that require maintenance to Council.
Making the switch - smart lighting initiatives
In 2019, Council will commence its Accelerated Smart LED Street and Public Lighting Replacement Program, which will see all street and park lights replaced with more efficient and cost-effective LED lighting. Smart controls will also be fitted that will allow easy and fast fault reporting and maintenance.
By implementing this project, Council will see an estimated annual saving of $650,000 in current electricity and maintenance costs.
Estimated energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by more than 64%, the equivalent of planting more than 500 hectares of Australian forest trees.
