Council is installing solar PV systems on its properties, which currently includes the solar PV system on the Palmerston Library and another system on the Recreation Centre.

Council will be adding to this portfolio with the installation of additional solar PV systems on it’s other major buildings in the coming years.

Project information

To achieve Council’s sustainability goals, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems are being installed at a number of Council’s facilities.

Council undertook a review of its major assets, which took into consideration power consumption, condition of the asset, and installation requirements before determining where solar PV systems should be installed.

The key buildings identified for the installation of a solar PV system include:

The installation of LED lights across these facilities will be the next stage of this project, as a means to further reduce energy consumption.

Benefits
  • reduce carbon emissions
  • reduce power costs
  • cost savings can be allocated to other Council programs and activities

Current status

The solar PV system on the Palmerston Library was completed in December 2018 and has reduced energy consumption from the power networks on average by 38%.

Energy consumption from the Palmerston Recreation Centre has reduced by 39%, with the system being in operation since April 2019.
