About Youth in Palmerston
The City of Palmerston has a large young population with around 30% of the population under 15 and 65% under 30 years old. The Council is committed to facilitating genuine youth participation opportunities within the community. For the purpose of Council activities and services, Youth are defined as those aged 12 to 25 years.
The Council is also committed to enhancing the amenity and attractiveness of public spaces for young people by:
- providing spaces for young people to congregate safely and freely as part of park upgrading and facility planning.
- providing space within the Library and Recreation Centre for youth-specific activities and programs.
- supporting the provision of safe night time entertainment for young people, with accompanying public transport access to community facilities.
- adopting youth inclusive design criteria in the assessment of development and design of the public realm.
Youth Coordinator
Council employs a Youth Coordinator to work with youth service providers and young people to work with youth service providers in palmerston and coordinated a series of safe, stimulating activities that best reflect youth priorities and provide the opportunity for palmerston youth to positively participate and contribute to their community.
The Youth Coordinator can assist with the securing of funding for community initiatives and with the preparation of funding applications as required.

What do youth want? online survey
Young Adults Program (YAP)
YAP is designed for 13-18 year olds and aims to provide fun learning opportunities with an emphasis on developing skills, building self-confidence and community participation. Membership is free and members are able to access special purpose computers and other resources.
Members meet in the library and are encouraged to be involved in events as programmed.

School Holiday Programs for youth

The City of Palmerston provides activities for youth during the June/July and the December/January School holidays.
R.O.C. Recreational Outdoor Challenge
This June/July 2009 school holiday period the City of Palmerston offered the ROC Program (Recreational Outdoor Challenge) between the dates 7th July 2009 and 16th July 2009.
ROC included, rock climbing, canoeing, archery and golf activities. All activities were for youth aged between 12 and 19 years and are FREE to attend and included a sausage sizzle or BBQ lunch. be supplied at most activities.

Palmerston and Rural Youth Services Network (PARYS)
Council convenes the Palmerston and Rural Youth Services (PARYS) network. PARYS Network provides a forum for workers in the sector to discuss local youth issues and develop strategies to deliver a range of services for Palmerston and rural people in the 12-25 year age group. The Network has existed since mid-1996. It comprises of workers from community and government agencies who have regular contact with young people, and representatives of agencies which provide and/or fund services for young people.

All youth workers/service providers are welcome to attend the meeting and be part of the network. Other community members who have an interest in addressing youth issues are also welcome to participate.
PARYS meets every 6 weeks, to obtain a meeting schedule and venue details, or to have your details added to the Network database please contact the Youth Coordinator.
A PARYS Update newsletter is produced weekly and distributed to the entire network. The newsletter includes information for youth service providers on training and funding opportunities, whats on and news from the sector. If you have news you would like to add to this newsletter please contact Youth Coordinator on 8935 9970.

PALMERSTON SKATEPARK ASSESSMENT
Convic Design has been engaged by the City of Palmerston to inspect and assess the condition and value of the existing skatepark at Palmerston. Convic Design conducted a skatepark users consultation session in August 2008 to gather feedback from Palmerston youth on upgrades to the existing skatepark and input on design ideas and concepts for any future skateparks or youth spaces in Palmerston.
Convic Design have provided Council with an assement report and recommendations for minor extensions and upgrades to the existing Palmerston Skatepark. The City of Palmerston has applied to the NT Government for support funding to complete the recommended extensions.

National Youth Week in Palmerston
NYW Opening Celebration in Palmerston
The City of Palmerston 2009 National Youth Week Opening Celebration was held in Goyder Square, Palmerston on Saturday March 28, 2009 and produly supported by beyondblue and the NT Government. The afternoon involved a youth bazaar incorporating information stalls, interactive activities and fun entertainment such as the rock climbing wall, gladiator battles, bungee trampoline and a free BBQ. From 5pm till 8pm youth rocked to some live music, featuring local youth bands "Paradox" and "Custom Freefall" from Palmerston High School. Taminimin High School talent was also showcased featuring their Choir of 30 students, a Taminimin Youth band and the fabulous duet of Melanie Totten and Kaitlin Power. Later entertainment kicked into to high gear with performance from local hip hop crew PUSH from Palmerston and Territory band NEO.
After 8pm, youth were invited to join in the Blue Light Disco taking place in the YMCA Recreation Centre just across the road. After the disco the young people that still had energy to burn joined in the Midnight Basketball presented by YWCA, Mission Australia, Neighbourhood Watch and the Multicultural Council NT & YMCA.
A big thank you goes out to all the youth, service providers, sporting groups and organisation that were involved and contributed to a great afternoon and evening for Palmerston youth.

Make a Move - BMX Freestyle Coaching Clinics.

Want to ride like the Pros? ... Then get taught by the Pros!
The City of Palmerston hosted a BMX freestyle coaching clinic for youth of Palmerston aged 12 - 19 years in April 2009. Professional coaches, that are also some of the best riders in Australia, Andrew Gul from Mongoose Bikes and Josh Mete from Forgotten Bikes visited the Palmerston Skate Park for the day and held coaching sessions for young BMX freestyle riders on bike maintenance and rider safety as well as developing BMX Freestyle skills.

This workshop was provided free of charge and was partly sponsored by NT Government, Office of Youth Affairs.
