Kerbside garbage collection

Garbage collection calendars  Recycling information  Archer Transfer site

The City of Palmerston is dedicated to reducing waste and providing quality services. Palmerston has twice weekly domestic waste collection and fortnightly kerbside recycling collection.

Each household is provided with one 120 litre green lidded bin for domestic waste and one 240 litre yellow lidded bin for recycling.

Unit complexes use 240 litre green lidded bins for domestic waste and 240 litre yellow lidded bins for recycling. Unit bins are collected four times a week on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Unit recycling is collected every Thursday. Unit bins are collected from the bin enclosure and do not need to be placed on the kerb.

recycling truckIf your Domestic bin is not collected on your collection day, it may be for one of these reasons:

  • Bin is packed with heavy items (Truck is only able to lift bin of up to 80kgs)
  • Rubbish has been stacked on top of or beside bin
  • Rubbish has been jammed into bin
  • Car parked in fornt of your bin

If your Recycle bin is not collected on your collection day, it may be for one of these above reasons or it could be due to Contamination (non recycables in the bin) or Gross Contamination (contamination such as unrinsed containers or foodscraps) Gross contamination that is not detected before bin is collected will cause the whole truck to be contaminated and it will then be discarded as general waste.

All Bins are to be removed from the verge, after collection.

It is an offence to place any domestic waste out for collection unless it is contained in a mobile garbage bin. On the spot fines may be issued to offenders.

Cleanaway is the current garbage collector for the City of Palmerston. Please contact Cleanaway on 1800 645 108 for all garbage enquiries including new bin service, bin repairs, collection days, or missed collection.

Waste changes

Archer General WasteArcher landfill will close in 2007 and there is no other site suitable for a landfill in Palmerston. Council has built a temporary transfer station at the site until a permanent transfer station can be built.

A landfill is generally a large open space or hole where new rubbish is dumped on top of piles of rubbish (at the 'tip face'). The 'tip face' location changes as the site fills up.

A transfer station is a raised platform (either temporary or permanent) which cars can drive up to dump waste into large skip bins, and then drive down the other side to exit. Permanent transfer stations are designed to be in the same place for a long period of time and generally have established infrastructure such as covered bins and associated facilities in the same place, with a focus on cleanliness, litter and odour control, accessibility and ease of use for residents.

Temporary transfer stations are similar to permanent transfer stations but the infrastructure is designed for temporary use only and generally less established than a permanent structure.
