The City of Palmerston is introducing a user pays system of paid car parking in the City Centre as part of the Palmerston City Centre Parking Strategy.
Paying for parking in council owned car parks will begin in the Palmerston City Centre from Monday 5 June 2017, as resolved at the ordinary Council meeting on Tuesday 16 May 2017.
The hours of paid parking operation will be Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm (excluding statutory NT public holidays).
A user pays system means that funding for car parking, including any future multi-deck car park, comes from the users of car parking and not rate revenue. Approximately 75% of total car parking in the CBD will continue to be free in existing private retail and commercial outlets and not subject to Council parking charges.
Planning and developing of a multi-deck car park is underway and while Council is progressing this project, car parking meters will be installed in the City Centre. There will be two parking zones across the City Centre:
- Zone A – 2 hour parking
- Zone B – all day parking
For the 2016/2017 financial year, the charge for Zone A has been set at $1.80 per hour (maximum 2 hours) while the Zone B charge has been set at $1.00 per hour up to a maximum charge of $4.00 (all day).
Annual all day parking permits will be available at a cost of $400.00 (pro-rata quarterly fees available) and are available to purchase from 5 June at Customer Services at Council’s Civic Centre.
Parking will remain free of charge for all Council parking areas signed as 1 hour or less and includes the on-street car parking along The Boulevard.
