Safety is everybody's right and everybody's responsibility. Palmerston Safe Communities is a program facilitated by the City of Palmerston to promote community safety and reduce injury in our City making it a safer place to live, work, study and play.
The Safe Communities Program is overseen by the Palmerston Safe Communities Committee which meets bi-monthly and includes representatives from Council, Government Departments, Police, Business, Community Organisations and other sectors.
As a designated International Safe Community (ISC), the City of Palmerston’s Safe Communities Program is driven by the identification of issues relating to the community through data, consultation and strategic long term planning; in line with the seven (7) key indicators of a safe community set by the World Health Organisation.
Safe communities have:
Indicator One - An infrastructure based on partnership and collaborations, governed by a cross sector group that is responsible for safety promotion in their community
Indicator Two - Long-term, sustainable programs covering genders and all age, environments, and situations
Indicator Three - Programs that target high-risk groups and environments, and programs that promote safety for vulnerable groups
Indicator Four - Programs that are based on the available evidence
Indicator Five - Programs that document the frequency and causes of injuries
Indicator Six - Evaluation measures to assess their programs, processes and effects of change
Indicator Seven - Ongoing participation in national and international Safe Communities networks
